What does a differential do?

A vehicle’s wheels rotate at different speeds, especially while turning corners. The differential is intended to propel a pair of wheels while allowing them to rotate at different speeds. Without a differential, the inner wheel is spinning and the outer wheel is dragging resulting in damage to your tires and uncontrolled handling. It also creates too much strain on the drivetrain and may result in failure or damage of the whole drivetrain. Newer vehicles have traction control which works by using the anti-lock braking system. This limits and sometimes stops the slippage of the low traction wheel which in turn increases torque that can be applied to both wheels.
