2003.5-2007 Ford Powerstroke 6.0L

Ford Powerstrokes with a 6.0L engine have one of the worst reputations in the diesel world. Ford has been frequently asked, “Why didn’t you just keep the 7.3L engine?” But really the question is unfair given the circumstances at the time of creation of the 6.0L engine.

After January 1st, 2003, the federal government set tougher diesel emission standards. All the top diesel application manufactures had to restructure and invest a substantial amount of money to abide these new standards. Ford was one to do the same. Some say Ford should of added an exhaust gas recirculation system, a variable geometry turbo, and a high pressure injection system to the 7.3L engine. But others say nay, a clean burning 7.3L engine would have a horsepower disadvantage compared to the GM Duramax and the Dodge Cummins applications at the time. Also with Dodge Cummins Bosch’s latest Common Rail Injection, Ford 7.3L engines were much too loud.

So the 6.0L was created with four goals in mind:

  • Meet Emission Standards
  • Have More Horsepower than the competition
  • Have Better Fuel Economy
  • Make a quieter engine

When 2003.5 came to be, the Ford Powerstrokes 6.0L were out on the market. In stock form this was a consumer dream. The 6.0L engine met all emission standards and passed all testing performed during research and development. Obviously stock vehicles have been factory tested, so they are thought to be more reliable, which is mostly true for 6.0L engines. 6.0L engines rarely experience failures when operating at stock power levels. But let’s be honest, why own a Diesel if you can’t MAX IT OUT! This seems to be the area where 6.0L engines are having trouble, because now with aftermarket modifications your now turning more rpm, fueling heavier, and creating more heat and higher cylinder pressures. But Orange County Diesel feels that aftermarket modifications aren’t bad for 6.0L engines, they just have to be the RIGHT aftermarket product!

Here is a list of common problems of the Ford Powerstroke 6.0L 2003.5-2007

  • Turbo Failure
  • Variable Geometry Turbo Vanes Sticking
  • Leaking Oil Under Turbo
  • Rough Idle Related to the Fuel Injection Control Module
  • Fuel Injection Control Module Calibration(s)
  • Fuel Injection Control Module Harness Wear

Get your Diesel’s Oil Changed!

Time for an oil change?  Looking for an experienced diesel mechanic shop in Orange County with a will provide speedy and efficient work?

Mention this Blog and get your Ford Powerstroke, GM Duramax or Dodge Cummins Truck Oil Change and Filter for

Only $109.00

(Non-Synthetic Motor Oil)

Changing your trucks oil every 2,500-3,000 miles is crucial. Changing your oil on a routine basis will help to ensure the life of your truck for many years to come.

There are many benefits that are associated with changing your trucks oil including increased gas mileage, increased performance and improved engine stability and life.

Your trucks oil is packed with important protective additives that can be depleted after about 2,500-3,000 miles.  Oil changes are the very best way to maintain adequate levels of protection for today’s high-performing engines, especially in severe driving conditions that include:

  • Rush Hour traffic commuting that requires frequent stops and idling
  • Dusty driving conditions
  • Heaving towing
  • High temperature operation
  • Long distance trips

Your trucks engine oil carry metals that have worn away, dirt and moisture from the air and combustion gasses that gets past the piston rings as well as sludge from chemical processes. These materials increase friction on your engines metal parts and seals and causes seals and gaskets to harden.

We see the difference in trucks daily that have been serviced regularly and those who have not.

In short changing your trucks oil and oil filter every 2,500-3,000 miles will save you a lot of money later on down the line in engine repairs.

Synthetic Diesel Oil

Synthetic oil is an oil product that contains additional chemical ingredients that are not present in crude oils. These additional ingredients are synthesized or created artificially and added to petroleum as a means of meeting specific needs for lubrication.

Fully synthetic motor oils contain non-conventional, high-performance fluids and a system of additives that helps prevent wear, keeps engines clean, flows easily, maintains viscosity performance, prevents rust and reduces friction.

Using synthetic oil has many advantages associated with it. The addition of artificial ingredients also helps to ease the burden on diminishing crude oil reserves, making it possible to use natural oils much more efficiently. Using a synthetic product often minimizes the oil sludge issues in your truck especially in older vehicles. Synthetic oils also have a higher tolerance to heat and aging.

A major benefit of using synthetic oil is a more efficient performance when your trucks engine is started in cold weather. Petroleum-based motor oil thickens in cold temperatures, requiring the starter and battery to work much harder to start a cold engine. Synthetic oil is not as affected by low temperatures and begins to lubricate all the working parts much more quickly and efficiently than crude oil products would, thus lowering your chance of gumming and unnecessary wear on your trucks individual engine components.

Synthetic oil was originally developed as a way to deal with the shortage of crude oil products and is used more frequently today due to the better performance. During periods when the price of crude oil rises significantly, synthetic oils may also be a less expensive lubricant option to go with.

Advantages of Using Synthetic Oil:

  • Better low and high temperature viscosity performance
  • Improved fuel economy in most engines
  • Decreased evaporative loss
  • Better lubrication on cold starts
  • Resistance to oxidation, thermal breakdown and oil sludge problems
  • Oil changes are not needed as often because synthetic is more durable

Disadvantages of Using Synthetic Oil:

  • The cost is usually 2 to 4 times more than petroleum-based oils
  • The lower friction may make them unsuitable for break-in period
  • Potential decomposition problems in certain chemical environments
  • Potential stress cracking of plastic components like polypxymethylene (POM) in the presence of  polyalpholefins (POA’s)
  • Synthetics do not hold lead in suspension as well as mineral oil
  • Synthetic oils are not recommended in automotive rotary engines
