Synthetic Oil VS. Regular Oil

Synthetic oil is an oil product that contains additional chemical ingredients that are not present in crude oils. These additional ingredients are synthesized or created artificially and added to petroleum as a means of meeting specific needs for lubrication.

Fully synthetic motor oils contain non-conventional, high-performance fluids and a system of additives that helps prevent wear, keeps engines clean, flows easily, maintains viscosity performance, prevents rust and reduces friction.

Using synthetic oil has many advantages associated with it. The addition of artificial ingredients also helps to ease the burden on diminishing crude oil reserves, making it possible to use natural oils much more efficiently. Using a synthetic product often minimizes the oil sludge issues in your truck especially in older vehicles. Synthetic oils also have a higher tolerance to heat and aging.

A major benefit of using synthetic oil is a more efficient performance when your trucks engine is started in cold weather. Petroleum-based motor oil thickens in cold temperatures, requiring the starter and battery to work much harder to start a cold engine. Synthetic oil is not as affected by low temperatures and begins to lubricate all the working parts much more quickly and efficiently than crude oil products would, thus lowering your chance of gumming and unnecessary wear on your trucks individual engine components.

Synthetic oil was originally developed as a way to deal with the shortage of crude oil products and is used more frequently today due to the better performance. During periods when the price of crude oil rises significantly, synthetic oils may also be a less expensive lubricant option to go with.

Advantages of Using Synthetic Oil:

  • Better low and high temperature viscosity performance
  • Improved fuel economy in most engines
  • Decreased evaporative loss
  • Better lubrication on cold starts
  • Resistance to oxidation, thermal breakdown and oil sludge problems
  • Oil changes are not needed as often because synthetic is more durable

Disadvantages of Using Synthetic Oil:

  • The cost is usually 2 to 4 times more than petroleum-based oils
  • The lower friction may make them unsuitable for break-in period
  • Potential decomposition problems in certain chemical environments
  • Potential stress cracking of plastic components like polypxymethylene (POM) in the presence of  polyalpholefins (POA’s)
  • Synthetics do not hold lead in suspension as well as mineral oil
  • Synthetic oils are not recommended in automotive rotary engines

Please Remember! Never dump your used motor oil in the trash, on the ground or down a sewer or storm drain!!!

What is the difference between the three media – Pro5R, ProDryS and ProGuard7 – that aFe offers?

logo pic

aFe offers three different types of filter media for most of their filters and  intake systems because everyone has different driving conditions and different driving needs.  There is the Pro5R, ProGuard7 and ProDryS. The differences basically are:

1. Pro5R is 5-layers of progressively finer mesh oiled cotton gauze which offers maximum airflow. This media is ideal for those who drive mostly on paved street and highway who want maximum horsepower.

2. ProGuard7 is 5 layers of progressively finer oiled cotton gauze used in the Pro5R media backed by another 2 layers of finer porosity synthetic non-woven media which offers maximum protection.  This media is ideal for those who do a lot of unpaved, off-road driving in severe dusty and dirty environments where protection is more important than maximum horsepower.  This media is most popular with compression-ignition diesel truck owners.

3. ProDryS is a 2 layer progressively finer porosity synthetic non-woven media, which is oil-free and offers maximum convenience since it does not require re-oiling.  This media is ideal for those who don’t want the hassle of re-oiling a filter.

Need an aFe Air Filter?

Pro Dry S Air Filters:

aFe offers you a better choice of oil-free filters: New Pro Dry S synthetic dry-media filters. Pro Dry S filters use a revolutionary two-ply synthetic material that is functionally superior to traditional paper media and single-ply synthetic, and easy to service. Pro Dry S dry-media filters increase airflow providing improved horsepower, torque, and fuel economy with 99.2%* filtration efficiency. Perhaps the greatest benefit of new Pro Dry S filters is the convenience of servicing these oil-free filters. To clean a Pro Dry S filter lightly tap it on the ground, vacuum it, or wash with soap and water. Solvents and oiling are not necessary. Replacement Pro Dry S filters for all air intake systems are also available and sold individually.

Pro 5R Air Filters:

Only aFe Pro-5R media is progressive in nature, offering 5 layers of progressively more tightly woven cotton gauze for protection levels in the high 98% range without sacrificing airflow. This high flow oiled conical performance filter provides excellent airflow for maximum horsepower and torque. Washable and reusable for multiple cleanings, the tall, open, evenly spaced pleats provide excellent dust holding capacity for longer service cycle between cleanings. Pliable polyurethane flange with integrated bumps insures tight, no leak seal over the life of the filter

Pro GUARD 7 Air Filters:

To address the need for extra protection from dust and dirt with washable/reusable oil-impregnated cotton gauze filters, aFe developed a new filtration technology so revolutionary that we applied for and received a patent. This new filtration technology is aptly called Pro-GUARD 7. With 5 layers of progressively finer mesh medical grade cotton gauze with micro fibers that attract smaller and smaller particles as air passes through is combined with 2 layers of random-porosity non-woven synthetic polyester fabric. These 7 layer combination of cotton gauze and non-woven polyester is sandwiched between 2 layers of epoxy coated aluminum wire mesh.

Because of compression ignition of diesel engines, the tolerance is much tighter than in a gasoline spark ignition engine. These tight tolerances require clean air and lots of it. Diesel engines require 7 times more air than a gasoline engine of equivalent size. The patented Pro-GUARD 7 filter media delivers more cool clean air needed for extended engine life, better fuel economy and additional power

Efficiency refers to a filters ability to efficiently filter out the dust and dirt particles from entering the air intake of the vehicle over time. Pro-GUARD 7 was developed with the need for high efficiency in mind. Generally accepted SAE standard for filtration efficiency is 99.5% fine dust. There is course dust efficiency and fine dust efficiency. 99.50% course dust efficiency is not difficult to achieve. Typical performance/cotton gauze filters will five you the airflow you need, but they sacrifice filtration efficiency to do so. They achieve the 99.5% course dust efficiency. The 99.5% fine dust efficiency is a different matter. Fine dust is what you want to keep out in the tighter tolerance turbo diesel engine. Pro-GUARD 7has been tested to surpass 99.5% fine dust filtration efficiency while delivering high airflow.
