Dual vs. Single Exhaust Systems

Diamond Eyelogo

Have you ever wondered if dual exhaust systems are quieter than single exhaust systems? Well, you are not alone Diesel Tech Magazine writers has asked themselves that very question and have gone out to find the answers for you. It seems that dual exhausts are not necessarily quieter, but they do have less in-cab noise and less of a drone.

The reason for that is that sound waves in dual exhausts end up splitting between each side of the vehicle so noise resonating back into the cabs is often canceled by opposing waves.  However, outside of the cab a dual exhaust can be just as loud as a single, with 5” exhaust being typically louder than a 4” system.  It seems that control of noise levels then really comes down to finding the right muffler. Diesel Tech Magazine recommends Banks Monster Exhaust Systems and BD Diesel Mufflers.

Purpose of an Exhaust System

What’s the purpose of an Exhaust System?

Most truck manufacturers leave room for improvement when it comes to horsepower and torque. Not to say trucks are poorly made, but many companies use less expensive alternatives when producing items such as exhaust systemsfor their vehicles. An aftermarket exhaust system can add to the performance, appearance, and sound of your truck.

Performance: An exhaust system can free some of the power in your engine. Exhaust systems allow for a quicker, more efficient path for exhaust gases to escape. That means your engine is able to “breathe” better, so used fuel and air exit the combustion chambers faster and new fuel and air can be burned to create more power.

Appearance: A factor to consider when purchasing exhaust systems is the material it is made out of. Most factory exhaust systems are made of mild steel, meaning they have a tendency to deteriorate over time. Better exhaust systems brands, such as ANSA Automotive’s Silverline, are constructed of stainless (T304 & T409) oraluminized steel. Stainless steeloffers longevity, usually for the life of the truck, where aluminized steel offers slightly better longevity over stock systems. Most exhaust systems add to your truck’s appearance, with largertips and highly polished mufflers for a more domineering look.

Sound: Another noticeable advantage is a more aggressive exhaust tone and deeper “growl” that is frequently heard on most high-end sports cars.

Whatever direction you choose to take your truck, whether it is performance, appearance, or sound, an exhaust system can dramatically change your truck!!

T304 or T409 Exhaust System? What is the Difference?

T304 or T409… they’re both stainless, right?

Not exactly. We know there are many differences between T304 and T409 exhaust systems, and they should definitely be considered before making purchases.

The three main things one should look for in purchasing exhaust systems are:

  • Corrosion Resistance
  • Finishing Quality
  • Price

Corrosion Resistance: T304 is classified as an austenitic stainless steel (consisting mainly of a nonmagnetic solid solution of ferric carbide or carbon in iron, used in making corrosion-resistant steel). T409 is classified as a ferric grade of steel (containing iron). T409 contains a lower chromium content of steel. Because of the differences in composition, T304 stainless provides superior resistance to the corrosive agents found in exhaust emissions and certain environments.

Finishing Quality: For those interested in the aesthetic features, the T304 exhausts have a mirror-like polished finish. T409 stainless exhausts typically have a matte finish.

Price: The last point is price. As mentioned earlier, T409 has a lower grade of steel that is significantly less expensive to produce, which results in a lower cost then T304 products.

Ford 6.0L 2003-2004 F-Super & Excursion lack of power condition, surge, or turbocharger flutter after performing Field Service

Ford 6.0L 2003-2004 F-Super & Excursion lack of power condition, surge, or turbocharger flutter after performing Field Service

OC Diesel discovered that some Ford 6.0L 2003-2004 F-Super Duty and 6.0L Excursion vehicles built on or before 9/29/2003 may experience a P006A, P132B, P0401 or P0402 diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) with a lack of power condition, surge, or turbocharger flutter after performing Field Service Action or after recalibrating the vehicle with the inferred Exhaust Pressure (EP) strategy. This inferred EP strategy does not use the Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP) sensors input, although the EBP sensor must remain connected to the tube and the wiring harness.

OC Diesel service technicians use procedures to repair troubles after receiving the inferred EP calibration update. There are a variety of reasons why a customer could experience a lack of  power condition with the inferred EP calibration.

These can include causes a person may not directly see as impacting the condition or codes set. For example; a Mass Air Flow (MAF) / Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) code can be related to a MAF sensor or a MAP sensor problem. However, those codes can be caused by other items such as: intake leak, exhaust leak, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) problems, and aftermarket modifications.

Ford 6.0L Lack of Power, White/Black Smoke or a Surge

This information apply to all FORD: 6.0L 2003-2005 Excursion
6.0L 2003-2007 F-Super Duty
6.0L 2004-2009 E-Series
6.0L 2004-2007 F-650, F-750

OC Diesel knows that some 2003-2007 F-Super Duty, 6.0L 2004-2007 F-650/750, 6.0L 2003-2005 Excursion and 6.0L 2004-2009 Econoline vehicles may exhibit one or a combination of the following concerns: lack of power, white/black smoke or a surge.

Pertaining to 6.0L 2003-2007 F-Super Duty, 6.0L 2003-2005 Excursion, and 6.0L 2004-2009 Econoline these concerns may or may not be accompanied by any one, or a combination, of the following diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): P0238, P0299, P0404, P0478, P2262 and/or P2263. These concerns and/or DTCs could be a result of cooking deposits inside the turbocharger for which OC Diesel has a solution.

The 6.0L 2004-2007 F-Super Duty 650-750 may have these concerns and may not be accompanied with the following DTCs: 261, 342, 343, 353, 354 and/or 361. These concerns may also be a result of cooking deposits inside the turbocharger.

OC Diesel can help these cooking deposits concerns that may be affecting the inside of  your turbocharger turbine housing. The cooking can impede vane response causing high or low instances of exhaust pressure and will usually decrease fuel economy, too. Unexpected exhaust pressure results can cause over-boost, under-boost, insufficient or excessive exhaust gas recirculation, or unexpected EGR valve position, resulting in fatal engine wear.
