2003.5-2007 Ford Powerstroke 6.0L

Ford Powerstrokes with a 6.0L engine have one of the worst reputations in the diesel world. Ford has been frequently asked, “Why didn’t you just keep the 7.3L engine?” But really the question is unfair given the circumstances at the time of creation of the 6.0L engine.

After January 1st, 2003, the federal government set tougher diesel emission standards. All the top diesel application manufactures had to restructure and invest a substantial amount of money to abide these new standards. Ford was one to do the same. Some say Ford should of added an exhaust gas recirculation system, a variable geometry turbo, and a high pressure injection system to the 7.3L engine. But others say nay, a clean burning 7.3L engine would have a horsepower disadvantage compared to the GM Duramax and the Dodge Cummins applications at the time. Also with Dodge Cummins Bosch’s latest Common Rail Injection, Ford 7.3L engines were much too loud.

So the 6.0L was created with four goals in mind:

  • Meet Emission Standards
  • Have More Horsepower than the competition
  • Have Better Fuel Economy
  • Make a quieter engine

When 2003.5 came to be, the Ford Powerstrokes 6.0L were out on the market. In stock form this was a consumer dream. The 6.0L engine met all emission standards and passed all testing performed during research and development. Obviously stock vehicles have been factory tested, so they are thought to be more reliable, which is mostly true for 6.0L engines. 6.0L engines rarely experience failures when operating at stock power levels. But let’s be honest, why own a Diesel if you can’t MAX IT OUT! This seems to be the area where 6.0L engines are having trouble, because now with aftermarket modifications your now turning more rpm, fueling heavier, and creating more heat and higher cylinder pressures. But Orange County Diesel feels that aftermarket modifications aren’t bad for 6.0L engines, they just have to be the RIGHT aftermarket product!

Here is a list of common problems of the Ford Powerstroke 6.0L 2003.5-2007

  • Turbo Failure
  • Variable Geometry Turbo Vanes Sticking
  • Leaking Oil Under Turbo
  • Rough Idle Related to the Fuel Injection Control Module

Ford 6.0L 2003-2004 F-Super & Excursion lack of power condition, surge, or turbocharger flutter after performing Field Service

Ford 6.0L 2003-2004 F-Super & Excursion lack of power condition, surge, or turbocharger flutter after performing Field Service

OC Diesel discovered that some Ford 6.0L 2003-2004 F-Super Duty and 6.0L Excursion vehicles built on or before 9/29/2003 may experience a P006A, P132B, P0401 or P0402 diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) with a lack of power condition, surge, or turbocharger flutter after performing Field Service Action or after recalibrating the vehicle with the inferred Exhaust Pressure (EP) strategy. This inferred EP strategy does not use the Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP) sensors input, although the EBP sensor must remain connected to the tube and the wiring harness.

OC Diesel service technicians use procedures to repair troubles after receiving the inferred EP calibration update. There are a variety of reasons why a customer could experience a lack of  power condition with the inferred EP calibration.

These can include causes a person may not directly see as impacting the condition or codes set. For example; a Mass Air Flow (MAF) / Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) code can be related to a MAF sensor or a MAP sensor problem. However, those codes can be caused by other items such as: intake leak, exhaust leak, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) problems, and aftermarket modifications.

Unlock your Diesel’s Performance Potential with Superchips New Flashpaq!

Flashpaq

A programmer is the secret to unlocking the performance potential of your diesel truck.  Superchips Flashpaq  is an easy purchase choice when you compare horsepower improvements and ease of installation to common under hood upgrades. Installing the Flashpaq is easy. Plug it into the diagnostic plug under your dash, select your options, and about 10 minutes later you’re done optimizing the performance of your diesel truck.

Part number SC1855 is for the Ford 7.3L, 6.4L or 6.0L Power Stroke F-Series trucks or Excursion SUV. Using the performance tune, Flashpaq delivers up to 114 horsepower and 206 lb-ft torque of power.

Part number SC2855 is for the GM 6.6L Duramax 2500 and 3500 series trucks. Using the performance tune, Flashpaq delivers up to 119 horsepower and 206 lb-ft torque of power.

Part number SC3855 is for the Dodge 6.7L or 5.9L Cummins Ram trucks. Using the performance tune, Flashpaq delivers up to 130 horsepower and 240 lb-ft torque of power.

Superchips does a variety of testing to ensure that you’ll get maximum power without compromising driveline durability. Every tune is dynamometer validated for power to the rear wheels, not the flywheel. One of the most important measurements used in testing is Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT). This is especially critical in turbo diesel applications. Tuning with EGT in mind will lead to impressive power without jeopardizing the longevity of your engine.

For users looking for towing power, Flashpaq optimizes your engine and transmission settings for towing up to OEM recommended weight limits. Superchips comprehensive approach to engineering for towing power targets these key areas: fuel injection and ignition, throttle position optimization, boost/VGT (variable gain turbo), transmission shifting and torque converter strategies. These areas are tuned across the entire RPM band to deliver a powerful, yet reliable towing experience.

Superchips can also deliver fuel savings and the ability to switch back and forth as much as you want. Superchips goal when it comes to improving power and fuel economy, is to provide optimal towing power while reducing cost of ownership. Superchips completed a year long real world study with the assistance of Richard Petty Driving Experience to answer that question. Superchips validated they deliver towing power and fuel economy. RPDE drove a portion of its diesel pickup truck fleet over 140,000 miles towing a 40-foot trailer with a weight of 13,500 pounds. They saved almost 20% in fuel during the test and they continue to use the product today.

Additional features of Flashpaq include transmission tuning settings for improved drivability and enhanced shift firmness, raised speed limiter and read and clear trouble codes. All Superchips products are available for purchase on Orange County Diesel’s online  store.

Quadzilla Boost Fooler for Dodge Cummins 5.9L and 6.7L Trucks

boost_fooler_ad If you are towing heavy loads, using a downloader/programmer or if you are just running modified injectors on your 1998.5-2009 5.9L or 6.7L Dodge Cummins, then the Quadzilla Boost Fooler is a MUST HAVE PRODUCT! On the 6.7L this product is a MUSY HAVE to go with ANY electronic performance device including the plug in devices!

While programmers can definitely improve performance, there are still things that they cannot do to allow you to gain optimal power and efficiency out of your engine. The Boost Fooler will allow you to increase turbo boost to compensate for the added fueling modifications you have made. Enabling your turbo to produce more boost will increase overall horsepower and torque and you will lower your exhaust temperatures.

The Boost Fooler is even a great enhancement for a stock truck that hauls heavy loads and needs exhaust temperature reduction. Even on a stock truck you can easily gain 5-8psi of boost pressure to help cool your EGTs. You will also see a slight improvement in peak horsepower.

The Quadzilla Boost Fooler uses a specialized high impedance circuit to allow you to make more turbo boost without setting any ECU error codes. The Boost Fooler is 100% weatherproof and designed for simple under-the-hood installation.

So what can you expect?

On any year model Dodge, you will be able to make as much turbo boost as possible with your fueling modifications. It is important to notice that the stock turbos do have some limitations.

If you desire extreme levels of turbo boost, you may need a larger, aftermarket turbocharger. Horsepower gains will vary from 10hp on a stock truck up to 50hp on heavily modified trucks. EGT reductions will vary from 75°F on a stock truck and up to 300°F on heavily modified trucks.

1998.5-2004 5.9L Cummins

On 1998.5-2004 5.9L Cummins you will need to physically modify your wastegate to gain more turbo boost. Doing this without the Boost Fooler will result in check engine lights and codes set into the computer. Stock 98-04 trucks should generate 18-23psi of boost pressure stock (depending on year model). With the Boost Fooler you will be able to run 35+ psi of boost depending on your fueling enhancements.

2004.5-2007 5.9L Cummins “600” and “610” Series Engines

The 2004.5-2007 5.9L Cummins uses an electronic wastegate which is operated off of the MAP sensor. In this instance no modifications to your turbo will be necessary. Stock 04.5-07 trucks typically spike up to 32psi of boost pressure. With the Boost Fooler you will see up to 40psi of boost on a stock truck and up to 48psi of boost on heavily fueled trucks.

2007.5-2009 6.7L Cummins

For the new 6.7L we have yet another new turbo design. This turbo uses electronically controlled vanes inside the turbo to adjust boost levels and allow for quicker spool up and ability to precisely control EGT’s. With the Boost Fooler installed you will see drops of 125 degrees on a stock truck (considerably more on modified trucks), up to 10psi peak boost gain and 6-8 psi sustained boost gain. This is the ONLY product on the market that is plug-and-play. There is no cutting, no splicing and no guessing. Simply plug this device in enjoy it!

All of these products can help increase the life of your engine by lowering peak exhaust temperatures while also giving you a small boost in power to go with it!
